This Week in Science #14

This week in Science was very fun. We didn't do much because we are reaching the ending of the year. Since we are reaching the end of the year David gave the whole cohort5 the oppertunity to make up work we didn't do or have to boost our grades up. I am trying to stay in the range of an A but it gets hard toward the end or the year.

What I learned this week in science is about the HIPPO dilemma. HIPPO dilemma is basically about how keeping the enviornment green. It was teaching us on how to save energy because we are running out of natural resources. On the bottom is a picture of how to keep the enviornment green.

TWIS # 15 Milestone

This week in Science I did something that I didn't think I would have to do again. What my class mates and I  did was the marshmellow challenge with the same people we did the challenge with back in November. YES ! November! And we are in June! The people who were in my group for the challenge was NayQuan,Christin,Zaria, and I. Doing the marshmellow challenge again for the second time around was fun. It was fun because we did it timed the first time, and we had to make the marshmellow stand straight and tall with out falling. We did this with spagetti sticks, tape and a paper brown bag(if you wanted to use the bag). My team and I only got the marshmellow to hold up for like 1 minute. When we did the challenge back in November my group's cenemiter of holding it straight and tall was 79. When we did it this time in June, it was 67. I think it was 67 because if the time limit we had this time. Then, we did the challenge again, but we didn't messure it because we was just doing it for fun.

What I learned about working with the same group I worked with in November was that people can change. Back in November, my whole entire group was cool with eachother. You know, every one in our group was talking, bonding and what not. When we did the marshmellow challenge again, every one in my group wasn't as cool. I mean nothing happend, no body disrespected anybody. But we didn't connect as we did back in November. BUT, when it came to putting our marshmellow in a way in can stay steady with out falling, my group was on point. We bonded like old times in November, even twice as better. We bonded twice as better because we knew we wanted our marshmellow tower to not only look better than everyone else's, but to stand so it wouldn't fall. What I learned also was that, my group and I realized,we shouldn't have the marshmellow stand up the way we had it standing last time in November. So what we did was come up with a way we can learn to hold up the marshmellow without it falling. I learned if we would of did what we did fir the challenge in November, in November our marshmellow would have stood up straight by itself. But, now we learned in June how to keep it steady with out falling. What we did differently from June to Novembers tower was.. we taped our spagetti sticks down to the desk, so they can stay with out breaking, taped sticks on top of sticks tightly. We then put our marshmellow and it stood! This marshmellow challange was better than last times marshmellow challenge.

In this picture we couldn't talk so we was writing on post-its to show what we wanted to do to make our marshmellow stand straight.

In this picture it shows ME trying to keep the marshmellow from falling :-)

In this picture right here, this is my favorite one and I choose it last so it can show how focused my whole group was in trying to make our marshmellow tower not collapse.

This Week in Science #12

This week in Science we did a lot of working. On Monday, we watched a video of how spiders trap their food before they eat it. On Tuesday, David showed us how to make a log book. The book is called "Spider Observation". The book log is something that we write in every day about a new word that can connect to our spider, and we draw a picture on how to explain that word.Spider Observation will also help us understand our new words we been stuyding because we get to write about the words on our OWN words. We will be working on the book for the rest f the week. On Wednesday, we fed our spiders fruit-flies, so it can have something to eat. On Thursday we don't have science. On Friday we didn't do anything because it was Jamies last day:( BOOOOOOO !!!! So instead, david ordered some papa Johns, and we just kicked back and enjoyed our moments with Jamie.

What I learned was how a spider can have energy in many ways. For example: Gluecose is a certain plant that has oxygen in it, so it allows the spider to have oxygen. I also learned making your book can be a lot of hard work, because you need to have the right picture to match  your word. We really didn'y do much this week, but I know we will continue to keep learning because its only the beginging that we started studying about pur spiders.

This Week In Science #13

I choose question B(If we were to add five more spiders to your spider habitat tank, what would happen? And why? Use these terms in your explanation: glucose, photosynthesis, energy, carbon dioxide, oxygen.)

What would happen is the spiders will die. I personally think the spiders will die because only one spider is living off of oxygen by itself, and if we put more spiders not all of them can live off one plant of oxygen. In this picture it shows how the Sun of Energy gives the spider energy to survive. It also shows how the gluecose gives oxygen because it is a plant.

TWIS #11

This week in Science we did a lot of things this week. On monday, it was our first day back from spring break. So David was just welcoming us back and explaining what we will be doing this week. On Monday we also asked questions on a post-it on ecosystem. David had a new vocabulary word on each poster. For ex: Ecosystem, Carbon cycle, Water cycle, Plant cell, Food chain, Producer, Photocynthesis. All these science vocabulary words, we had to ask questions on what we thought they ment. On Tuesday, we went to seward park. We went to seward park because we are getting spiders next week, and we wanted to put items in our tank for the spider,to see how we cn keep it alive with these certain items. My group and I put a log in, flowers, leaves and water. Our spider is going to live off these items in our tank. We also took pictures of things that what we think is part of an ecosystem. My group took pictures of grass, water, the slides in the park, and trees. All these things are apart of the ecosystem because it is apart of nature. On Wednsday, we put our pictures up on google docs, and wrote about how the picture was apart of ecosystem. We didn't have Science on Thrusday. And today is Friday, and we just got through our first week of being back from brea, writing about what we did :).

This is a picture I took in seward park. It represents ecosystem because it has nature.

We didn't really learn much this week, because we just got back from break.  I learned ecosystem has a lot to do with nature. Another idea  I  learned was that we  are going to be dealing with spiders which is cool, and we are going to see how long they can survive with our tank. I am still unsure about ecosystems. Even though I know it is apart of nature, I don't know what the word it self means  but I am positive these next few weeks will help me understand it more. I can't wait to deal with the spiders, and see how long it survives with the tank we got built up for it !!

This Month In Science # 10

What we did this Month in Science was, we been studying Human Impact. Human Impact Institute came to our class to help us discuss Human Transportation. We then went out side our school to have people do some surveys on transportation, water, energy and waste. Not a lot of people had the time to answer our surveys. My group is Water. We tested water, to see how much chlorine it had in it. The school water, had chlorine in it, and so did the fish in our classes water.Martinique, Sebastian, Kaitlyn, Tiffany, Anna, Shayna, and I are in my group. We been making a poster to represent our selected topic, which is water. We came up with a slogan.. which is Water you gonna do when its gone? Which means what will you do, when the water is gone, if you keep on polluting in the water. It's most likely to look black and unhealthy to drink or use for anything. We made a design to match our slogan, which the design will be on cups, cups tipping over, and the cups will have dirty water as it tips over in each example. Cool shirt right? I can't wait to wear it !!

This is a picture of an example for our t-shirt design, its not what we choose, but its a example step, that made us choose the example we choose for final. It shows water being polluted, because garbage is in the water

What I learned this week in science is that, the water in the ocean is being polluted. Since it is being polluted we are drinking water with chlorine. Chlorine is being put in the water, but is that honestly making it clean? If we have to drink water with chlorine in it, I think it makes the water just as unhealthy, because of the simple fact that we are putting contaminated water into our systems. So the water is just as dirty. I told you how we went out and asked people to answer our surveys right? Okay, so NO ONE , I mean NO ONE wanted to answer our groups survey. It seemed as if people in the lower east side don't have time to answer questions. But the people who did, they said they turned the water on about 5-7 times, wasting water, which they did not know if the water has chlorine it. Working with the Human Impact Institute, was fun. They was really cool. Their names are Adam, Melanie, and Tara. Melanie was my favorite. She really helped my group have the design we have now, and it is awesome. And she was fun talking to. It was a fun experience to have people like the Human Impact Institute come to our class, because got to meet people we don't know.

Human Impact Ad Campaign

This Picture shows Water being half way black.. If people keep poluting and putting junk, it will be fully black. Right now it's half way black.

Wastewater a key issue in NY'S fracking debate

The main point to this article is that fracking is a problem. Not sure of how to handle millions of gallons of contaminated water. There are 3 options for waste disposal in The Department of Environmental Conservations. These 3 options are..
— Truck the millions of gallons of wastewater produced per well to a treatment facility and either discharge the treated water into a river or reuse it for another drilling project;
— Ship it out of state for deep-well injection disposal; or
— Recycle it on-site for drilling multiple wells. The authors arguement is that we are left with solid landfilling. This author didn't use graphs or pictures, a lot of text was used.

I agree with this article because even if we use left over water we are left with landfilling solid water. But then again I don't agree with some parts to this article because a lot of money is being wasted to make the water better, but then once again it's only making the water better by putting in treatments even though it is expensive. 1.3 billion to 1.7 billion is being used for treatment.

This Week In Science #9

This Week In Science we did an experiment on cutting animals open. We also cut them open to see what's inside them. My partner and I, Tiffany worked on a perch. The first day, we just observed the perches mouth, and to see what was in the mouth. That was on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday we dissected the perch! It was sooooo nasty, because the perches skin was SOOOO dry, so it took even longer to cut it open, because it was dry.
This is the Perch I dissected. My partner Tiffany and I cut it open from the side, were you see its Gills

What I learned this week in science was that, if a fish has 3 holes on its body, it is a female. If it has one hole, it is a boy. This perch happens to be a boy. I also learned that fish make kids weirdly. The guy spits his semen out, and the girl perch spits her eggs out. After this, the semen hits the eggs, and then the babies form. Weird right? At first I found it nasty. I honestly wouldn't want to do this project again because the dead animals stink. Especially the perch!

This Week In Science#8

This week in Science Tiffany and I dissected  PERCH. We turned it on the Ventral view because we thought it would be easier than to cut through the perch than on the Dorsal view. We dissected it from its Anterior , which is its head, and from there we opened its mouth. An Anterior is different from a Posterior . An Anterior is a head and a Posterior is oppisite of a head, which can be a tail, but in a perches case is is the fin. This is the perch we dissected.
What I learned this week in science is that a perch female, you can tell if is a female if it has 3 holes, if its a male it only has one. This perch that i dissected is a male, he only has one hole. So you know its a male. I was so excited to dissect, but these dead animals really smell gross!! And I also learned I am scared of anything dead! lol. I had an ahaha moment when I couldn't open the perches mouth and I had someone help me ! Dissecting was a fun yet weird expierence.

This Week In Science #7

This week in Science I finished my Biome project. What I did in my project was I talked about how my fantasy animal would live on the desert, and how it would survive on the desert. My fantasy animal was a shark. I made him so he could have the following: A nose like a dog to smell when its preditors are coming, arms and legs so he could grab his preditors, and the legs are so he can run really fast. What I did in my project was talk about the temperature under the deep sea, and did the voice and speaker notes.I also did a Shark before , and I talked about what it eats.

What I learned was how animals survive under water, and how fun it could be working with people you don't normally work with. I also learned how to use my imagintion for science and make up my own animal.
